Mike Matheny, former Cardinals skipper, is taking over in the dugout for the Royals as Kansas City begins a new era. Kansas City has recorded two straight losing seasons, but should climb out of the pit this year and return to playing winning baseball again. Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield, Adalberto Mondesi and Jorge Soler are key players who should keep performing well for the Royals. Vetteran Alex Gordon will be in the outfield again and Maikel Franco will play third base. Kansas City may be a little short in talented pitching. The rotation features starters Brad Keller, Jakob Junis and Danny Duffy. Mike Montgomery is listed as another starter and it will be interesting to see how he performs in a full-time role. Ian Kennedy is the closer. He notched 30 saves last year. The Royals will need better pitching to be serious contenders.
