I like the Royals move adding Cueto. Hopefully they can add someone to replace Infante at 2nd.

Shocking to wake up to! Do they both plan to flip them to other teams? Haha

Least the Rockies got the sentimentality out of the way and made the right call to blow it up and fast, unlike the Phillies

Ben Zobrist to Royals for Aaron Brooks and Sean Manaea. Really like Manaea but Zobrist will help replace Gordon or maybe start at 2B instead of Infante.

Lots to give up for the Royals for a team that looks like a lock to make the playoffs anyway. May have a better shot at winning the World Series but may have shortened their window of contention. Easy bet says they don't make the World Series

Yeah but when you are a franchise like the Royals, you have to go for the ring this year when it is in reach and you haven't won in 30 years.

Other than Finnegan and Manaea they didn't really give up much. Brooks and Lamb weren't going to see time in KC. Cody Reed has potential but is far from a lock. Cueto and Zobrist push them over the top in my opinion.

I don't know, the playoffs are a crap shoot, and they could've won the Central without making any moves. Mid market teams giving up a bunch of upside depth for a couple of rentals usually signifies the oncoming down slide when looking back.

Hope they make the World Series to face my Cardinals, but it's just a hard thing to do back to back. I'd also like to see them re-sign Cueto

But having an ace like Cueto is crucial to postseason success.

I'm not an encyclopedia..

But in 2006 the Cardinals two best starters were Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver.

You don't need an "ace" to win the World Series, you need hot pitchers, sometimes its the ace (Bumgardner, Hamels), sometimes it's not. The bigger list is aces who don't make it to the World Series.

The playoffs are a crapshoot. The Phillies 102 win team with Halladay/Lee/Hamels/Oswalt lost in the first round.

Luckily we have the internet, since 2000, the 02 angels and 06 cardinals are the only two teams that did not have someone that could be consider an ace. And Mel the phillies lost in game 5 1-0 that year. Roy Halladay pitched a gem but the Cardinals had Chris Carpenter to counter. My point is having an elite pitcher is more valuable in the postseason than the regular season. The royals have a guy in Cueto that can go to in a do or die game and feel really good about their chances.

An ace greatly improves your chances. Greater is the list of teams without an ace that never went anywhere.

I like the moves. If Cueto leaves, they'll get a draft pick anyway.

You can't make a qualifying offer to a player traded during the season

Yeah Cueto and Zobrist are just rentals. They won't receive any kind of compensation in the offseason for either of them. I hope they at least make an effort to re-sign both of them.

I don't get why that is brought up, yes there have been many aces in the league that haven't won because they had teammates that sucked. It's not because they underachieved. I am talking about the importance of an ace to a team that is playoff bound. When it is short series it is a huge advantage if you have a guy pitching 2 or 3 games in a series that can shut down the other team. It gives the other team a lot less margin of error in the other games knowing they will to face the stud multiple times.

FYI both of these statements can be true at the same time:

1) You do not need an ace to win in the playoffs.
2) Teams with an ace do better than teams without an ace.

You are welcome.
